With the growing popularity of cabinet scrapers, woodworkers have been looking for a burnisher that works well and will last a lifetime. I think we have found such a burnisher. A burnisher must satisfy two criteria-one is that it's hardness must exceed that of the scraper. The other requires it to be very smooth. Industrial grade ceramic, second in hardness only to diamond, can be finished to a glassy shine, hence satisifies both the criteria very well. Our burnisher consists of a ceramic rod 1/4" diameter 5" long which utilizes our modular anodized aluminum handle (about 1" x 6"). Two allen screws attach the ceramic rod to the handle. Total length about 9". The knurled handle is very comfortable and a few light strokes of the ceramic rod over the edge of the scraper at a slight angle results in "turning the edge". The rod retains it's smooth surface even after burnishing the hardest scrapers. Simply wash with soap and water to remove the dark residue. |
